H E I Ð D Í S B U Z G Ò
My name is Heiðdís Buzgò and I am an artist living in Akureyri.
I graduated with a preliminary qualification from the Art School in Reykjavík in 2017 and a diploma and work permit in graphic design at the Art School in Akureyri in 2023. Now I'm taking my masters in 2D concept illustration at Universal Arts School in Valencia, Spain.
As is often the case, my interest in visual arts quickly became apparent when I was little as I could sit and draw for hours. The thing that most influenced my artistic creation when I was younger were cartoons and picture books where I could experience all the things that reality could not create.
When I was younger, I had a lot of difficulty with reading, but still I gravitated to stories and narratives, and preferably those that didn't happen in the real world, and you could escape from everyday life and get lost somewhere else. The world of novels was the best place to be where anything could happen and time was lost.
This probably led me to look for content that conveyed messages and stories without necessarily having to use so much written text. Stories in pictures. Today, I still value narratives in pictures in an ever-expanding world of abstraction (Books, films, cartoons, comics, video games, etc.) and I think that good visual literacy is just as healthy for us as good text literacy. It all comes from the same source.
I believe that every narrative tradition is deeply rooted in all of us, it makes us human and with it we can explain the world and ourselves. We use narratives in almost everything we enjoy and do, reflecting all our dimensions and potential.
Many people say that the eyes are our most important sense, and I believe that all narratives can be lifted to a higher level with a good visual interpretation and thus reach more people. A picture is worth a thousand words. Good visual interpretation can turn bland information into a grand adventure by saying what our words never could and making a more human connection with other people.
The artist's journey is long and winding. You can always create more and do better and learn something new. Art creation is never about the end of the road, but about the journey itself, enjoying the moment, growing and developing throughout your life and sharing it all with others around you.
I am grateful for the purpose of making the world more diverse and interesting, of creating and communicating and expanding the world.
